Behind the Scenes with Debra Ehrhardt from Jamaica – Episode 18
“Your saying ‘no’ to me is just a way of finding out ok, how I can get ‘yes’.”
“In America there is no class system; they see you as you are.”
“When a man is involved in a child’s life, it makes such a tremendous difference.”
“People who travel are so much more interesting than those who never leave their tiny little city.”
-Debra Ehrhardt
“The Mighty Mekong” – Episode 17
“You should see the boat, maties… a clapboard, Lao (as in wow!) flat-top, tin-roofed, diesel-puffing dinosaur, huffing and puffing her way up the Mighty Mekong, from Chiang Khong in northern Thailand to Luang Prabang in central Laos. All aboard!”
“Behind the Scenes with Morlan Higgins” – Episode 16
I was thinking, perhaps, more poetically and metaphorically. How life itself is like a great journey, a trip of unpredictable twists and turns… where you never know exactly where you’ll end up or how you’ll get there. Some people come into, and go out of, your life… over the years… like Morlan and I have… but somehow the river of life reconnects us… because maybe… we’ve been on the same path, after all.
Amsterdam, the “Perfect City” – Episode 15
Amsterdam in winter: hot belgian waffles, fresh European ham, goat cheese and dark beer, fresh baguettes, yagermeister, Sumatran coffee, truffles, thick mushroom soup, 34 year old Portuguese port, foot long bratwurst, warm “nuwein” in the street markets, yogurt in cartons, hot frites on the street with mayonnaise…. flannel shirts, turtlenecks, silk leggings under the pants, hot steam coming out of your mouth, like from a New Yawk “manhole”.
“Behind the Scenes with Liz Femi from Nigeria” – Episode 14
Welcome to another Behind the Scenes episode on the “e. travels with e. trules” podcast. In this lively episode, I’ll be talking with Liz Femi, a fellow solo performer and friend, who was born in the United Kingdom and grew up in Nigeria, a country not many tourists – or travelers – know much about. Liz is a small, smart, beautiful, and feisty young woman, who her mom describes as “a really bendy, bouncy branch…connected to a strong Nigerian oak tree.”
The Gentrification of Mi Barrio, Echo Park – Episode 13
Echo Park has always been known for its history, all the way back to its silent movie-making days when Charlie Chaplin and Mack Sennett made their madcap two reelers right down the hill in their own studios, when the neighborhood was still called “Edendale”.
“Behind The Scenes with with Israeli Diplomat, Raphael Morav”, Episode 12
“The kibbutz is a very good school for life.”
“Our friendship is a testament to bonds that can be made across cultures and borders.”
–Raphael Morav, Israeli diplomat and Episode 12’s guest on “e-travels with e. trules”
The Iron Horse and the Borneo Bucket Brigade – Episode 11
The island of Borneo, East Malaysia, 2002. There are images of Osama Bin Laden on the screen savers of my Islamic colleagues at the state university and on the ubiquitous t-shirts for sale in every mall. Bin Laden is the most popular and famous man in this part of the world, as he is the only David to stand up to Goliath America since… well…. forever. But to me, it’s definitely… culture shock!
Behind the Scenes with Chris Christensen, the “Amateur Traveler”, Episode 10
1- “Never lose your sense of wonder and adventure when you’re traveling.”
2- “Never complain that you don’t do things that way at home; that’s part of the point of traveling.”
3- “Never whine, because in the grand scheme of things, if you can afford to travel, what do you have to complain about? “
