But it's more than just that. It's also about his life beginning in New York and how he created a life for himself, his wife and now their adopted son in the Echo Park section of Los Angeles. \n\nWhat's especially enjoyable about his accounts of his life is not just what's going on in the present but also the historical knowledge he imparts with a sense of humor. \n\nHe probably remembers Gene Shepard from many many years ago on WOR A.M. Radio in New York City and I as a young child back then would listen to him on the equivalent of podcasts back then. Younger people may recall the movie \"A Christmas Story\" and the famous saying about not getting a Bebe gun because he will shoot his eye out. Though, after listening to his podcast, it's inspiring me to attempt to catch up someday and ramp up the timeline on my exploration of this mysterious, beautiful world.\n\nAs much as the travel adventures are wonderful to hear on their own though, the real treasure here comes in his thoughtful reflection on humanity in its many garments and idiosyncracies. He certainly could have been a cultural anthropologist if he didn't become a theatre professor...but I'm glad he went toward the stage; now we get the benefits of his runminations on humanity through the vessel of a uniquely gifted, entertaining storyteller.\n\nI've seen him perform many times, but this podcast is a great reminder of how much character and warmth his voice carries with every phrase as a trained performer. Born in Chicago, Mike created the Travel Tales Podcast in 2011 \u2013 which he sees as a lighthearted conversation highlighting the best, and worst, experiences that travel has to offer. Every episode, Mike welcomes a different guest (some famous, some not) to hear their true Tales from lands far away.<\/p>\n<p>How and why, the podcast? Well when Mike began appearing on many of his fellow comedians\u2019 shows, he knew that he wanted to start one of his own. But what would be the podcast&#8217;s theme? What stories did he want to tell? To hear? Having traveled so much, he realized that he never tired of meeting people from different corners of the world, or of hearing stories from\u00a0places he\u2019d never been. In this\u00a0way, he&#8217;s\u00a0able to give brief snapshots and recommendations of places\u00a0that he and his guests have\u00a0seen and experienced first hand. Mike hopes that his\u00a0podcast inspires others to expand their horizons, realizing that travel can be intimidating for some, but the show does all it\u00a0can to convince people to see the world, and to grow from their experiences.<\/p>\n<p>Along with his love of food and drink, Mike is an avid scuba diver, hiker, surfer, skier, and soccer enthusiast. He loves maps and the challenge of learning the train systems in foreign cities throughout the world. He\u2019s taken just about every form of transportation known to man &#8211; from rickshaws to junk boats, from camel carts to tuk-tuks. He\u2019ll try just about anything once, and he suggests that his listeners do the same.<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve listened to several Travel Tales podcast episodes, and I think Mike and I are both trying to do the same thing of sorts\u2026. on our podcasts&#8230; bring\u00a0the world closer together\u2026 one travel tale\u00a0at a time.
